BIRD WATCHING
Belize is a birder’s paradise

Belize is a birder’s paradise and there is no shortage of birds on Caye Caulker.  The island boasts over 190 species of resident and migratory birds.  Birds can be seen regularly, particularly in the areas designated as reserves, as well as the mini-reserve near the village, and in the mangrove and forest areas near the airstrip.

There are several tour guides available on the island to help you spot the more elusive species.  Some of the birds found on the island are rarely seen elsewhere in the country.  On early morning nature walks, expect to see the white-crowned pigeon and the mangrove warbler, which are relatively common on Caye Caulker.  Rare birds such as the Caribbean Elaenia and the rufous-necked woodrail, as well as unusual nesting birds such as the black catbird can also be spotted.  Ask about guided birding and ecology tours, as well as educational slide presentations.
